Does a general surgery perform stoma surgery?

A stoma brings part of the bowel through an opening in the abdomen so waste can leave the body into a pouch. It may be a colostomy or ileostomy and may be intended for a limited period or longer-term use. The operation can form part of bowel surgery, including treatment for cancer, obstruction or severe bowel damage. A stoma nurse can mark a practical position before surgery and teach pouch care.

Before admission, tell the team about medicines, allergies, previous abdominal operations and any mobility or skin concerns. Practise the pouch-changing technique offered by the stoma nurse and identify where supplies will come from. After discharge, follow advice on wound care, lifting, food and fluids, and keep a note of stoma output and skin changes if the team requests it.

Seek prompt advice for a stoma that becomes dark, very pale or unusually swollen, persistent leakage that damages the surrounding skin, repeated vomiting, increasing abdominal pain, fever, or an unexpected stop in output with cramps. Very high watery output, dizziness, a dry mouth or reduced urination can signal dehydration and also need timely assessment. Use emergency services for collapse, severe pain or heavy bleeding.

Clarify which type of stoma is proposed, whether it might later be reversed, and how its position will be chosen. Ask who will teach daily care, how to obtain suitable pouches, which changes in output are expected, and whom to contact for leakage, skin soreness or supply problems.
