A clinician can ask about symptoms, sexual exposure, previous test results and any medicines or conditions that affect your care. Screening may use urine, blood, swabs or a clinical examination. Book a general-practice appointment and say that you want sexual health screening when you arrange it. Tell the clinician when a possible exposure occurred, whether you have symptoms, and whether a partner has received a diagnosis. Avoid sexual contact or use barrier protection until you have advice and, when needed, results. Do not take leftover antibiotics before testing, because they may affect assessment.

Seek prompt medical care for severe pelvic or testicular pain, fever with genital symptoms, rapidly worsening sores, or heavy unexpected bleeding. Urgent advice is also appropriate after a recent exposure that may require time-sensitive preventive treatment. A clinician can explain testing windows and whether repeat testing is needed.
