A lipoma is a soft lump made of fatty tissue beneath the skin. During a consultation, the clinician considers whether it is soft, mobile, stable and consistent with a lipoma, along with its depth, size, position and symptoms. Removal may be discussed if the lump is painful, catches on clothing, limits comfort, continues to enlarge or causes concern about its diagnosis. The removed tissue may be examined when the clinician considers that useful for confirming what it is.

Note when the lump appeared and whether its shape, firmness, mobility or tenderness has changed. Tell the surgeon about medicines that affect bleeding, allergies and prior operations. Keep the skin clean and avoid squeezing or repeatedly pressing the lump. Before scheduling, clarify the expected wound care, activity restrictions, scar position and whether a sample will be sent for examination.

Seek prompt medical assessment if a lump grows quickly, becomes hard or fixed, causes persistent pain, produces numbness or weakness, or develops skin changes. After removal, contact the treating team for worsening redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, fever or pain that is not settling. Heavy bleeding or difficulty moving the nearby area needs urgent attention.

Ask how confident the examination is that the lump is a lipoma, whether imaging or tissue examination is needed, which removal method is suitable, and how the wound and scar will be managed.
