Does andrology perform semen analysis?

Andrology is the area of medicine and laboratory science concerned with male reproductive health. An andrology laboratory receives and examines a semen sample, while an andrologist or fertility clinician interprets the findings alongside medical history and examination.

The report can describe semen volume and appearance, sperm concentration, movement and form, and the presence of other cells. A result is one part of a fertility assessment; it does not by itself explain every reason conception may be difficult. Results can vary, so your clinician may recommend a repeat sample or additional evaluation.

Follow the laboratory’s collection instructions carefully. Usually the sample is collected into a sterile container after a stated period without ejaculation, and it should not be contaminated by lubricants or ordinary containers. Tell the laboratory about recent fever, illness, medicines or supplements, because these details may help with interpretation. If collecting at home, ask how quickly and at what temperature the sample must arrive.

If the first result is outside the laboratory’s reference range, ask what it means for your situation rather than trying to interpret one value alone.

Arrange a fertility review if semen findings are repeatedly abnormal, conception has not occurred despite trying, or you have pain, swelling, a testicular lump, erectile difficulty or blood in semen. Seek urgent care for sudden severe testicular pain or swelling, which can require immediate assessment.

Ask which laboratory will analyse the sample, how to prepare, whether a repeat test is needed, and how each result relates to fertility. Ask whether hormonal tests, an examination or referral to an andrologist would add useful information.
