Do you need topical corticosteroids after patch testing?

Patch testing places small amounts of suspected allergens on the skin and checks for a delayed reaction. Mild redness or itching at a positive site can occur, while some people have little discomfort after the patches are removed. A topical corticosteroid may calm inflammation, but the choice depends on the reaction’s severity, location, skin thickness, and whether the rash is still spreading. The most useful long-term step is identifying and avoiding the responsible substance. A positive test does not mean every product containing that ingredient will affect you in the same way; your clinician can explain practical avoidance.

Follow the clinic’s instructions and record which test site reacted. Use only the product and strength recommended for that area, applying a thin layer for the advised period. Avoid rubbing, fragranced products, and unapproved creams on irritated skin. Ask how to identify the allergen in cosmetics, medicines, hair products, adhesives, or workplace materials.
