Do you need physiotherapy after shoulder reduction?

Short answer
Physiotherapy is often recommended after shoulder reduction to restore movement and strength, but the timing and exercises must match the injury and shoulder stability.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Rehabilitation goals
- Restore comfortable movement, muscle control, strength, and confidence.
- Timing
- Depends on stability, healing, imaging findings, and associated injury.
Why rehabilitation matters
Reduction puts the shoulder joint back into position; it does not by itself restore normal muscle control or confidence. After immobilisation or a painful injury, the shoulder may feel stiff and the supporting muscles may be inhibited. Physiotherapy can guide gradual movement, rotator-cuff and shoulder-blade strengthening, and a return to daily activities. The plan changes if there is a fracture, tendon injury, nerve irritation, or concern that the joint is unstable.
What to do after reduction
Attend the follow-up arranged after the reduction so circulation, sensation, stability, and any imaging findings can be reviewed. Follow instructions about a sling and avoid forceful overhead movement or positions that could stress the healing shoulder until cleared. A physiotherapist can show you safe early exercises and progress them as pain, movement, and strength improve. Do not return to sport or lifting based only on reduced pain; control and stability matter too.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent assessment if the shoulder appears to slip out again, becomes visibly deformed, or pain suddenly becomes severe. Get prompt help for a cold, pale, or blue hand, increasing swelling, new numbness, inability to move the fingers, or weakness that was not present after the reduction.
Questions to ask
When can I begin shoulder movement? Should I wear the sling during the day or at night? Was there a fracture or tendon injury? Which positions should I avoid, and what signs show that strengthening can progress? When is it safe to drive, work, lift, or return to sport?

Questions people ask
Can I do shoulder exercises immediately after reduction?
Only follow the exercises and movement limits given by your treating team, because early motion may need to be restricted when tissues are injured.
Will physiotherapy prevent another dislocation?
It can improve strength, control, and movement habits, but future risk also depends on the injury pattern and individual shoulder stability.
