Do you need fracture casting after closed reduction?

Closed reduction realigns a broken bone or joint without making an incision. The surrounding tissues may still be swollen, and the bone can shift while it heals. A cast, splint or brace can limit movement and protect the alignment. The choice depends on the bone involved, fracture pattern, stability after reduction, swelling and skin condition. Imaging and examinations during follow-up help show whether the position remains acceptable. A cast may later be changed or replaced as swelling settles.

Keep the cast or splint dry and do not insert objects inside it to scratch. Elevate the injured limb as instructed, move the free fingers or toes gently when allowed, and follow weight-bearing restrictions. Keep follow-up imaging appointments because alignment can change without obvious symptoms. Ask how to use crutches, protect the support and manage pain. Never cut, loosen or remove the cast yourself.

Seek urgent help for increasing tightness, severe or unrelieved pain, numbness, new weakness, blue or pale fingers or toes, inability to move them, or swelling that does not improve with elevation. Contact the team for a cracked, wet or loose cast, foul odour, drainage, fever or worsening skin pain. These changes can signal pressure, circulation problems or infection.

Ask what the reduction achieved, which support is planned, how long it should stay on, when repeat imaging is needed, and which movements or loads are allowed. Clarify warning signs and the planned transition out of immobilisation.
