Do you need embryo transfer after IVF?

IVF describes fertilising an egg with sperm in a laboratory and monitoring embryo development. Embryo transfer is a separate procedure in which a selected embryo is placed into the uterus. Because they are separate stages, fertilisation does not require a transfer on the same day or in the same cycle.

A transfer may be postponed while embryos are frozen, while the uterine lining is prepared, or while a medical issue is addressed. Sometimes there are no embryos suitable for transfer, or a person chooses to pause treatment. The timing should be explained as part of your individual IVF plan.

Ask when embryo development will be reviewed and whether the plan is a fresh transfer, a frozen transfer, or no transfer for now. Clarify how the uterine lining will be prepared, how many embryos are being considered, and what happens to remaining embryos. After egg collection or other IVF medicines, contact your clinic urgently for severe pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, breathing trouble, persistent vomiting, increasing abdominal swelling, or reduced urination. Do not wait for a planned transfer appointment if these symptoms appear.
