Do you need a referral for trigger finger release?

A hand surgeon or another trained clinician examines how the finger catches, locks, or bends, and checks tenderness near the affected tendon. Treatment may include activity changes, splinting, an injection, or release surgery, depending on the findings and how symptoms affect you. A referral does not mean surgery is already planned.

Contact the hand clinic and ask whether it accepts self-referrals and what records it requests. If a referral is needed, your primary-care doctor can describe the locking, pain, duration, and any treatments tried. Tell the clinician about diabetes, inflammatory conditions, previous hand procedures, and medicines that may affect treatment planning. Check your health plan's referral rules separately.

Arrange prompt assessment if the finger is stuck and cannot be straightened, pain or swelling follows an injury, the finger becomes pale or blue, or you develop spreading redness, warmth, or fever. Sudden loss of sensation or movement also needs timely care.

Ask what is causing the catching, whether an injection or splint is reasonable, what release involves, how the wound is cared for, and when hand movement can resume.
