Do You Need a Referral for Trichoscopy?

Trichoscopy is a close examination of the hair shafts, follicles and scalp using magnification and light. It can help a trained clinician describe patterns of shedding, thinning, inflammation or changes around individual follicles. The examination is usually performed during a consultation and does not require a surgical procedure.

Some clinics offer direct appointments with a dermatologist, trichologist or another clinician trained in hair and scalp assessment. Other services ask for a referral so the examination is coordinated with a broader medical review. A referral requirement is therefore an access rule, not a statement about how serious your hair concern is.

Contact the clinic before booking and ask whether self-referral is accepted, who performs the examination, and whether the appointment includes a medical history and scalp examination. Mention recent hair treatments, new medicines, scalp symptoms and how the hair change started.

Bring a list of medicines and relevant health conditions. Avoid applying heavy styling products immediately beforehand if the clinic asks for a clear view of the scalp. If a referral is required, a primary-care clinician or dermatologist can decide whether trichoscopy fits your symptoms and what other assessment may be useful.

Arrange medical review promptly for sudden extensive shedding, rapidly developing bald patches, a painful or swollen scalp, pus, marked scaling, bleeding, or hair loss with changes in your eyebrows or body hair. These features can need diagnosis and treatment beyond an imaging-style hair assessment.

Ask whether your appointment will include trichoscopy, what the examination can and cannot show, whether photographs will be taken, and whether you need any preparation. You can also ask what findings would lead to a scalp biopsy, blood testing or a follow-up visit.
