Do you need a referral for external fixation?

An external fixator uses pins or wires placed into bone and connected to a frame outside the skin. The frame holds the injured area steady while the team manages the fracture, swelling, or soft-tissue injury. The choice depends on the fracture pattern, skin and muscle condition, alignment, and your general health.

This is not usually arranged as a routine self-booked treatment. A hospital emergency team, trauma doctor, or orthopedic surgeon normally evaluates the injury and decides whether external fixation is appropriate. The frame may be temporary or part of a longer treatment plan.

If external fixation has been discussed, follow the trauma team’s instructions and take the referral, imaging reports, medication list, and allergy information to the appointment. Keep the injured limb protected as advised, and do not adjust the frame or pin dressings unless the clinical team has shown you how.

Ask who will monitor the pins, how dressings should be changed, and which movements or weight-bearing limits apply. Follow-up may include wound checks and imaging so the team can assess alignment and healing.

Go to emergency care for a suspected major fracture, an open wound over a fracture, uncontrolled bleeding, a cold or blue limb, worsening numbness, or inability to move the fingers or toes. After a frame is fitted, seek prompt help for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, fever, loose pins, frame damage, or sudden severe pain.

Ask: Why is external fixation suitable for this injury? Is it expected to be temporary? How should I protect the frame? What weight can I place on the limb? Who should I contact about pin-site changes or frame problems?
