What should you know about disseminated lichen planus?

Lichen planus can cause clusters of itchy, flat-topped or slightly raised bumps. When disseminated, the eruption covers multiple body regions and may be especially noticeable on the wrists, ankles, lower back, or legs. Some people also develop mouth soreness or delicate white lines, nail changes, or scalp involvement. The appearance can resemble other rashes, so a clinician may examine the skin closely and occasionally recommend a biopsy.

Scratching can create new irritated areas and leave darker or lighter marks after the inflammation settles. The condition is inflammatory rather than a sign that the rash is spreading by touch.
