Dissecting Cellulitis Causes

The condition begins around scalp hair follicles and can progress beneath the surface, producing tender lumps, pus, crusting, and areas of hair loss. Its exact cause is not fully understood. Follicular blockage, an overactive inflammatory response, and individual susceptibility may all contribute. It is not the same as ordinary bacterial cellulitis, which is a spreading infection of deeper skin. Athlete's foot, skin breaks, or type 2 diabetes can raise concern for other skin infections, but they do not by themselves explain every scalp lump.

Arrange a dermatology assessment for recurring scalp nodules, draining areas, or patchy hair loss. Do not squeeze or lance lumps at home; this can worsen tissue injury and make infection harder to judge. Use gentle scalp cleansing, avoid tight headwear and close shaving during flares, and keep any drainage covered with clean dressings. Record triggers, pain, drainage, and hair changes so the clinician can plan treatment.

Seek prompt care if redness or swelling spreads quickly, pain becomes severe, or you develop fever, weakness, confusion, or difficulty staying hydrated. These features can signal a significant infection or another urgent problem. Emergency assessment is needed for confusion, fainting, or severe breathing difficulty.
