What should you know about dislocated wrist pain?

Dislocated wrist pain needs prompt medical assessment because a wrist injury may affect bones, ligaments, nerves or blood vessels. Swelling, bruising and limited movement can occur with several injuries, so appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

A true dislocation means the joint surfaces are no longer aligned. A fracture, including a Distal Radius Fracture, can happen at the same time or produce similar pain and deformity. Numbness or tingling may reflect pressure on a nerve; pain at the thumb side can also arise from De Quervain's Tenosynovitis, while gradual symptoms may have other causes such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or Hand Osteoarthritis.

A clinician checks alignment, skin, sensation, finger movement and circulation. X-rays or other imaging may be needed before treatment.

Remove rings, keep the wrist still in the position found, and support the hand and forearm with a splint or folded cloth. Use a wrapped cold pack and keep the hand raised if comfortable. Do not straighten the wrist, massage it, or try to push the joint back. Avoid eating or drinking until a clinician advises, since a procedure may be needed.

Attend emergency care after a significant injury or whenever the wrist looks misshapen, pain is severe, or movement is very limited.
