What should you know about dislocated shoulder reduction techniques?

Short answer
Dislocated shoulder reduction techniques are controlled clinician-led movements chosen after checking for fracture, nerve injury and circulation problems.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer
Dislocated shoulder reduction techniques are controlled clinician-led movements chosen after checking for fracture, nerve injury and circulation problems. They are not suitable for self-treatment because unplanned force may worsen bone or soft-tissue injury.
How reduction is selected
A clinician first examines the shoulder’s contour, pain, sensation, pulse and finger movement. Imaging may be needed, especially after a significant injury or when a fracture is possible. The chosen technique uses slow positioning or gentle traction to help the upper-arm bone return to its socket while limiting strain.
Pain relief, local anaesthesia or sedation may be considered. Once the joint is back in place, the examination is repeated and the shoulder may be supported. A follow-up plan addresses stiffness, strength and the possibility of shoulder instability.
Safe steps before and after
Before assessment, keep the arm close to the body and support it in the most comfortable position. Use a wrapped cold pack and avoid testing the joint or accepting a home reduction attempt. After treatment, follow instructions about the sling, prescribed medicines, wound or skin care, and gradual movement.
Shoulder Reduction may be followed by Physiotherapy. If the joint repeatedly slips out, the clinician may discuss Shoulder Stabilisation Surgery and the reasons it could be appropriate.
When urgent help is needed
Go to emergency care promptly if the shoulder is visibly deformed, pain began after trauma, or the arm cannot be moved. Cold, pale or blue fingers; new numbness or weakness; severe swelling; an open wound; or uncontrolled pain require immediate attention because they may signal injury beyond the joint.
Questions to ask
Ask whether imaging shows a fracture, what pain-control option is planned, how the arm and hand will be checked afterward, and when driving or work may be safe. Ask how to protect the shoulder during recovery and what symptoms should trigger review.

Questions people ask
Are all reduction techniques the same?
No. The clinician selects positioning and traction based on the injury, examination findings and comfort needs.
Should I move the shoulder after reduction?
Only follow the movement plan given by your clinician; early forceful movement can disrupt healing.
