Dislocated elbow reduction: what to know

A clinician gently guides the elbow bones back into position. Pain relief or sedation may be used so the muscles relax and the procedure can be controlled. Imaging before or after reduction helps identify a fracture and confirm alignment. The arm is then supported while the team reassesses pulse, sensation, and finger movement.

Reduction is not a home manoeuvre. Forceful pulling or twisting can worsen a fracture or harm nerves and blood vessels.

Keep the prescribed splint or support in place and follow instructions about bathing, sleeping, and movement. Elevate the hand when practical and use only advised pain relief. Follow-up determines when gentle elbow exercises can begin. Physiotherapy may later build motion and strength while reducing the chance that protective stiffness limits daily activities.

Return urgently if pain becomes severe, the splint feels too tight, fingers become numb or weak, or the hand turns pale, blue, or cold. New deformity, increasing swelling, or loss of movement after reduction also needs prompt review.

Ask whether imaging showed a fracture, how stable the elbow is, and how long support is needed. Clarify permitted exercises, warning signs, follow-up timing, and when work, driving, or sport may be considered.
