Dishwasher Hands Eczema

Frequent soaking removes protective oils from the outer skin. Dish soap, food residue, heat, and scrubbing can then trigger dryness, redness, itching, scaling, and painful cracks around the fingers or knuckles. Atopic dermatitis can make this barrier more sensitive. Cracks may sting when exposed to water and can allow irritation to continue. Darker marks may remain after inflammation settles; this is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Use protective gloves for washing dishes, with clean cotton liners if sweating or friction causes problems. Keep hands dry between tasks, rinse away detergent, and apply a fragrance-free moisturiser immediately after washing. Choose lukewarm water and avoid harsh scrubbing. If a product repeatedly triggers a flare, note its name and stop using it where practical. A clinician can confirm the diagnosis and discuss treatment for persistent inflammation.

Book an assessment if the rash keeps returning despite reducing wet work, spreads beyond the hands, interrupts sleep, or causes deep cracks. Seek prompt advice for increasing warmth, swelling, crusting, pus, or rapidly worsening pain, because broken skin can become infected.
