Disease Caused by Ringworm: What to Know

Despite its name, ringworm is not caused by a worm. It can produce an itchy, scaly patch with a more active edge and clearer-looking centre, although appearances vary by body site and skin tone. The infection can spread through close contact, shared towels, clothing, sports equipment, or infected pets. A similar-looking rash may have another cause, so a clinician may inspect the scale or take a sample when the diagnosis is uncertain.

Keep the area clean and dry, wash hands after touching it, and avoid sharing towels, clothing, brushes, or sports gear.
