Discitis presents with pain near an infected spinal disc, while osteomyelitis presents with infection in bone. The conditions can overlap. Pain is often deep, persistent, and worse with movement; stiffness or guarding may limit ordinary activity. Fever, chills, tiredness, or reduced appetite can occur, although some people have no obvious fever.

When infection affects nerves or the spinal cord, symptoms may include tingling, numbness, weakness, balance problems, or changes in bladder or bowel control. These neurological features are red flags and should not be watched at home.

Contact a clinician promptly for unexplained spinal pain that persists or steadily worsens, particularly after an operation, injection, wound, or recent infection. Note when the pain began, whether it travels, your temperature, and any changes in strength or sensation. Avoid masking a worsening pattern with strenuous exercise or leftover antibiotics.

Assessment may include a neurological examination, blood tests, and imaging. The symptoms alone cannot distinguish infection from disc, muscle, fracture, or inflammatory problems.

Seek emergency care immediately for new weakness, spreading numbness, difficulty walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe pain with fever, confusion, fainting, or shaking chills. Rapid deterioration is urgent even if the original pain seemed manageable.
