Diphtheria toxin test: what to know

A clinician considers the throat appearance, fever, neck swelling, vaccination history and possible contact with diphtheria. A swab from the throat or nose can be sent to a laboratory to look for the responsible bacteria and investigate toxin production. Testing can take time, and a negative early result may not settle the diagnosis by itself. The healthcare team combines the laboratory report with the examination and the course of illness.

Call ahead before visiting a clinic and describe breathing, swallowing and voice changes. Tell the team about antibiotics already taken, allergies, vaccination records and recent close contacts. Follow instructions about masks, separate transport and avoiding contact with others. Do not wait for a test appointment if symptoms are worsening. If clinicians prescribe antibiotics, take them exactly as directed while they arrange any further treatment or contact tracing.

Use emergency services for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, a rapidly enlarging neck, collapse, confusion, chest discomfort or severe weakness. These signs can reflect airway obstruction or toxin-related illness. A sore throat with a firm coating or significant exposure also warrants prompt same-day medical advice, even without severe pain.
