What should you know about diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis vaccine side effects?

A local reaction reflects activity in the immune system and is different from catching diphtheria, tetanus or pertussis from the vaccine. A mild fever or unsettled behaviour can occur in children. A sore throat or cough after vaccination has many possible causes and should be assessed according to its severity rather than assumed to be a vaccine reaction.

Rest, drink fluids and use a cool compress on a tender injection site. Wear loose clothing and follow the clinician’s advice about fever medicine; do not give a child medicine unless the dose is suitable for that child. Record the reaction and tell the vaccinator before a future dose.

Call emergency services for wheezing, throat or tongue swelling, widespread hives, collapse, or severe difficulty breathing after vaccination. Seek medical advice for a high or persistent fever, unusual sleepiness, a seizure, dehydration, or symptoms that are worsening instead of settling.
