What should you know about diphtheria test name?

Short answer
The main diphtheria test is a culture or molecular test from a throat, nose or skin swab.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the test involves
A clinician collects a swab from the throat, nose or an active skin lesion, depending on the symptoms. The laboratory looks for Corynebacterium diphtheriae using culture and may use molecular methods to identify bacterial material. Further laboratory work can assess whether a strain produces toxin. The exact test name on a request form may vary by laboratory.
A throat coating, sore throat or persistent ulcer can have causes other than diphtheria. Test results are interpreted alongside the examination and exposure history. Tell the clinician about recent antibiotics, because medicine taken before sampling may affect what grows in the laboratory.
What to do if testing is planned
Seek prompt medical advice rather than arranging a home test. Follow instructions about isolation, wound covering and contact with family members. If diphtheria is strongly suspected, clinicians may begin treatment before the laboratory report returns. Close contacts may also need samples, preventive antibiotics or vaccination review. Antibiotic Treatment and Childhood Immunisation explain related care.
Do not wait for the result in an emergency
Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow saliva, blue lips, severe neck swelling, fainting, chest discomfort or new weakness. A test result should not delay assessment of an airway problem or other serious symptom. Keep suspected wound material covered and avoid close contact until a clinician gives specific advice.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which body site will be sampled, whether toxin testing is needed, when results may guide treatment, and whether contacts require testing or preventive care.

Should antibiotics wait until a swab result?
Not necessarily. A clinician may start treatment promptly when diphtheria is suspected.
