Diphtheria prognosis

Diphtheria can form a thick membrane in the throat and release a toxin. Illness may therefore require close observation for airway problems, heart inflammation or nerve-related weakness. Recovery is more likely to be straightforward when assessment and treatment start early, but symptoms can persist after the infection begins to clear.

A sore throat alone has many possible causes and does not establish diphtheria. Diagnosis depends on clinical assessment and appropriate testing; see [Sore Throat] for general symptom context.

Take prescribed medicines for the full advised course, rest and keep follow-up appointments. Do not stop treatment because the throat feels better. [Antibiotic Treatment] may be part of care, while additional therapy can be needed for toxin-related complications.

Ask when normal activities and close contact can resume. People recovering from diphtheria may need repeat checks, including review of vaccination because infection does not reliably replace immunisation.

Get emergency help for worsening breathing, blue or grey lips, inability to swallow, collapse, chest discomfort or marked palpitations. Seek prompt review for new weakness, difficulty speaking, vision changes, choking, or increasing neck swelling.

Ask what complications are being monitored, when infection testing is clear, which follow-up visits are needed, whether close contacts require care, and when vaccination should be updated.
