A clinician may look for patterns such as scaling, redness, follicle openings, broken hairs, different hair shaft thicknesses or signs of inflammation. The images can support a history and hands-on examination, but the camera itself does not identify every cause of hair shedding or scalp discomfort.

A trichoscopy assessment is non-invasive. It may be performed on several scalp areas so the clinician can compare findings rather than relying on one visible patch.
