What should you know about a digital TENS unit?

TENS means transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. Small sticky pads sit on intact skin near, rather than directly over, the painful area. A battery-powered device delivers a programmed sensation such as tingling. The intensity should feel noticeable but tolerable, not sharply painful. Relief varies, and TENS is a symptom-management tool rather than a way to repair a torn ligament, compressed nerve, or broken bone.

A physiotherapist or other clinician can help choose pad placement and settings for your problem. Keep the pads and device instructions available so you can repeat the advised setup safely.

Check the skin before and after use, keep electrodes away from broken or irritated skin, and turn the unit off before removing pads. Do not place electrodes across the front of the neck, over the eyes, or across the chest unless a qualified clinician specifically directs this. Ask for individual advice if you have an implanted electrical device, reduced skin sensation, a seizure disorder, or are pregnant. Stop if the skin becomes sore or the sensation becomes painful.

Arrange medical assessment for new severe pain, unexplained weakness, spreading numbness, a swollen or hot joint, or pain after a significant injury. Get urgent help for chest pain, fainting, difficulty breathing, or sudden loss of movement. Do not use TENS to delay assessment of a new symptom that is getting worse.
