Digital and computational pathology

A pathologist interprets the tissue alongside clinical information and other test results. Software can support tasks such as counting stained cells, outlining tumour areas and organising cases, but it does not replace the clinical responsibility of the specialist.

Tissue from a biopsy or operation is processed, cut into thin sections, stained and placed on glass slides. A scanner captures detailed images that can be viewed securely on a screen. The original specimen and slides remain important because extra stains or molecular tests may still be needed.

Computational tools can apply consistent measurements across selected image regions. Their output depends on image quality, staining, the type of tissue and the task for which the software was validated. Artefacts, unusual tumours and scant samples may require closer manual review.

Read the final pathology report with the clinician managing your care. Ask whether the diagnosis was made from a digital image, whether an algorithm supported any measurement and whether further stains or molecular tests are pending.

If the result is unexpected, unclear or could substantially change treatment, ask whether the slides and tissue can be reviewed by another specialist. Digital images can make remote consultation easier, although the receiving service may still request original material or a newly scanned slide.

Contact the care team if separate reports appear inconsistent, if the report says the sample was inadequate or if treatment is due to begin before pending pathology is explained. Pathology technology itself does not create a medical emergency; urgent care should instead be guided by your symptoms and the instructions given for your condition or procedure.

Has a specialist pathologist signed the final diagnosis? Did software assist with a particular measurement, and how was that output checked? Are more tests pending, and would a second opinion require the original slides, a digital copy or both?
