Short answer

Different vaginal odours can reflect normal changes, sweat, blood, semen, or an infection, especially when discharge or irritation also changes.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Normal variation
Can follow sweat, periods, sex, or hormonal changes
Needs assessment
Strong persistent odour or odour with pain, itching, or unusual discharge

What the smell may suggest

A mild musky or sour scent can vary with sweat, hormones, and the menstrual cycle. A metallic smell may accompany menstrual blood. A strong fishy odour, particularly with thin grey or unusual discharge, can occur with bacterial vaginosis. A rotten smell may be linked to a retained tampon or another foreign object and needs assessment. Itching, burning, pain during urination, pelvic pain, or sores make infection more concerning.

Practical next steps

Wash the outside gently with lukewarm water or an unperfumed cleanser, then dry well. Avoid douching, scented wipes, vaginal deodorants, and inserting home remedies, because they can irritate tissue and disturb the normal balance. Change out of damp clothing and use breathable underwear. Do not self-treat solely from smell; a clinician may examine you and test a sample before choosing treatment.

When to seek care

Arrange an appointment for a new or persistent strong odour, unusual discharge, itching, burning, bleeding after sex, or pain. Seek prompt medical care for pelvic pain with fever, feeling very unwell, vomiting, or possible pregnancy. Urgent assessment is also appropriate if you suspect a retained tampon. Antibiotic treatment for pelvic infection may be needed when examination indicates that type of infection.

Questions for your doctor

Could this be bacterial vaginosis, a sexually transmitted infection, thrush, or irritation? Do I need a swab or urine test? Should my partner be assessed? Which products should I stop using while the area heals?

Questions people ask

Is every vaginal odour abnormal?

No. A mild scent can be normal and can change during the cycle, after exercise, or around sex.

Should I use a vaginal deodorant?

No. Scented products and douching can irritate the vagina and make symptoms harder to interpret.
