Difference between PGT-A and PGT-M

Short answer
PGT-A screens embryos for chromosome-number differences, while PGT-M checks for a specific inherited genetic condition.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- PGT-A
- Examines chromosome number in embryos.
- PGT-M
- Targets a specific inherited single-gene condition.
What each test examines
PGT-A means preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy. It assesses whether an embryo has the expected number of chromosomes. PGT-M means preimplantation genetic testing for a monogenic condition. It looks for a known gene change linked to a particular inherited disorder in a family.
The tests answer different questions and may be considered separately or together in selected IVF cycles. Embryo biopsy and laboratory analysis do not replace pregnancy screening or diagnostic testing later in pregnancy. Results can be clear, inconclusive, or show that embryos need individual discussion, so counselling matters.
Planning with your fertility team
Ask for genetic counselling before choosing testing. PGT-M usually requires a family-specific laboratory plan, which may involve reviewing genetic reports from an affected relative or parent. Your team can explain biopsy timing, how results may affect embryo selection, the possibility of no suitable embryo being available, and whether additional prenatal testing will be offered. Next-generation sequencing may be one laboratory technology used in genetic analysis.
When to seek support
Contact your fertility clinic promptly if you do not understand a report, receive an unexpected result, or feel pressured to make a decision quickly. Genetic counselling is especially useful when the inherited condition, family history, or test limitation is uncertain. Emotional support can also help while results and treatment choices are being discussed.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what risk or family history makes PGT-A or PGT-M relevant, what the test can and cannot detect, how results guide transfer decisions, and what confirmatory testing is advised during pregnancy.

Questions people ask
Are PGT-A and PGT-M the same test?
No. PGT-A assesses chromosome-number differences, whereas PGT-M targets a known inherited gene condition.
Does embryo testing guarantee a healthy pregnancy?
No. It provides selected genetic information and does not rule out every health condition or replace pregnancy care.
