Difference between Braxton Hicks and labour

Short answer
Braxton Hicks contractions are irregular practice tightenings, while labour contractions become regular, stronger and closer together and help the cervix open.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the patterns differ
Braxton Hicks may feel like the abdomen is tightening and then relaxing. They often stay irregular, do not steadily intensify, and may settle after rest, hydration or a change of activity. True labour tends to develop a rhythm: each contraction lasts and returns in a predictable pattern, with increasing strength or discomfort. Pain may begin in the back and move towards the front, although experiences vary.
A mucus plug or a small amount of blood-streaked mucus can occur as the cervix changes. Fluid leaking from the vagina may mean the waters have broken and needs prompt maternity advice. Contractions before the expected term can indicate preterm labour, which should be assessed even when the pain is mild.
What you can do now
Note when each tightening starts, how long it lasts and when the next one begins. Drink fluids, rest on your side and notice whether the pattern changes. Keep your maternity unit's contact details available. Do not rely on a home pattern alone if you are unsure, particularly if you are not yet at term.
When to seek care
Contact your maternity team urgently for regular painful contractions, vaginal bleeding, a gush or ongoing trickle of fluid, reduced fetal movement, severe abdominal pain, fever or feeling faint. If contractions occur before term, seek assessment promptly because early treatment may protect your health and the baby's wellbeing.
Questions for your doctor or midwife
Ask how your unit defines a concerning contraction pattern, when to come in, how to monitor fetal movement, and what to do if your waters break. If early labour is suspected, ask whether options such as an Antenatal Steroid Injection or Cervical Cerclage apply to your situation.

Questions people ask
Can Braxton Hicks become regular?
They can cluster for a while, but they commonly ease rather than steadily build. Call your maternity team if the pattern persists or you have warning symptoms.
Can I have labour without severe pain?
Yes. Labour can begin with manageable discomfort, so timing, progression, fluid loss and other symptoms matter as much as pain intensity.
