What does diastasis recti look like?

Short answer
Diastasis recti may look like a ridge, doming, or soft midline gap along the abdomen when you tense or sit up.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common appearance
- Midline ridge, doming, or soft hollow
- Often noticed during
- Sitting up, coughing, or bracing
What the appearance can mean
The two sides of the abdominal muscles can move apart as the connective tissue between them stretches. A visible line, hollow, or bulge may run from the breastbone toward the navel, although the change is not always easy to see while relaxed. The skin may feel softer in the centre, and the abdomen can feel less supported during lifting, coughing, or getting out of bed. Appearance alone cannot confirm the condition; a clinician or physiotherapist can assess the midline and how the abdominal wall works.
What you can do
Notice whether the shape changes with position, effort, or breath, without repeatedly straining to check it. Roll onto your side before rising, breathe out during effort, and avoid exercises that cause pronounced doming until you have guidance. A pelvic health assessment can help tailor gentle deep-core and movement work; postnatal physiotherapy is one possible route.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment if the change is painful, affects daily movement, or comes with back or pelvic discomfort, urine leakage, or difficulty lifting. Seek prompt medical care for a new, very tender, firm, or discoloured bulge, vomiting, or severe abdominal pain, because those features need assessment beyond a routine abdominal-wall check.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the midline appearance fits diastasis recti, whether a hernia should be excluded, and which movements are suitable for your current recovery. You can also ask how progress will be assessed and when to review symptoms.

Questions people ask
Can diastasis recti be visible when relaxed?
Sometimes, but it may be clearer when the abdominal wall is gently engaged or when changing position.
Does a ridge prove I have diastasis recti?
No. A ridge can have several explanations, so an examination is useful if it persists or causes symptoms.
