Short answer

Effective diarrhoea relief starts with replacing fluid and salts, then choosing gentle foods and checking for warning signs.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Frequent fluids
Food
Small, simple portions
Avoid self-treatment when
Blood, fever, or severe pain is present

What relief can and cannot do

Diarrhoea is a symptom, so relief depends partly on its cause. A short episode may follow an infection, food poisoning, a food intolerance, or a change in routine. Repeated symptoms can be linked with coeliac disease, Crohn's disease, irritable bowel syndrome, giardiasis, or an overactive thyroid. Easing stool frequency does not necessarily remove the trigger, and some medicines are unsuitable when infection or inflammation is suspected.

Practical steps

Sip water often and use oral rehydration solution when fluid loss is significant. Eat small amounts of rice, toast, soup, potatoes, or another simple food that you tolerate; resume a normal diet gradually. Avoid alcohol and foods that clearly worsen symptoms. Rest, wash hands thoroughly, and clean bathroom surfaces if an infection is possible. A pharmacist can advise about short-term medicine after checking your symptoms, health conditions, and regular treatments.

When relief is not enough

Seek urgent medical attention for fainting, confusion, severe weakness, very little urine, inability to keep drinks down, severe abdominal pain, blood or black stool, or a high fever. Arrange medical advice if symptoms continue, recur frequently, follow travel or antibiotics, or occur with a long-term illness. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with significant medical conditions may need advice sooner because dehydration can progress quickly.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what may be causing the pattern, whether you need tests, and which foods or medicines are reasonable for you. Tell them about travel, recent antibiotics, fever, pain, blood, vomiting, and your usual bowel habits.
