Diarrhoea for 3 days: what to know

A short episode commonly follows gastroenteritis, food poisoning, or a sudden dietary change, but the pattern matters more than the label. Note cramps, vomiting, fever, blood, recent travel, sick contacts, and any new medicine. Food intolerance can also cause loose stools after particular foods. Three days of symptoms does not by itself show which condition is responsible.

Sip water regularly and consider oral rehydration solution if stools are frequent or you feel washed out. Continue light meals such as rice, bread, soup, or bananas if tolerated. Avoid alcohol and foods that make the diarrhoea worse. Wash hands with soap, clean toilet surfaces, and avoid preparing food for others while infectious diarrhoea is possible. Check with a pharmacist before taking symptom-relief medicine.

Get urgent help for severe abdominal pain, blood or black stool, repeated vomiting, faintness, confusion, or inability to drink. Seek medical advice promptly for signs of dehydration such as a dry mouth, dizziness, or passing very little urine. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and those with weakened immunity may need earlier assessment.
