Diarrhoea after running: what should you know?

Short answer
Diarrhoea after running can result from gut movement, heat or food timing, so replace fluids and look for patterns.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why it may happen
Running can jostle the bowel and redirect blood flow while the body is working hard. A large meal close to exercise, caffeine, very concentrated sports drinks, heat or dehydration may make urgency worse. Chafing, cramping and an urgent bowel movement can occur during or soon after a longer or harder run. If episodes happen away from exercise too, other explanations include food intolerance, irritable bowel syndrome, gastroenteritis, food poisoning, coeliac disease or Crohn's disease. The pattern matters more than one isolated episode.
How to reduce episodes
Drink regularly through the day and replace fluid after a sweaty run. Avoid testing unfamiliar foods before training; allow time for a smaller, familiar meal to settle, and notice whether caffeine, dairy or high-fibre foods trigger symptoms. Ease back on intensity in hot conditions and stop if you feel weak, dizzy or unwell. Keep a simple diary of distance, pace, weather, meals, drinks and bowel symptoms. Do not take anti-diarrhoeal medicine before exercise without checking that it is appropriate for you.
When to get medical help
Get urgent help for bloody or black stools, severe abdominal pain, fainting, confusion, repeated vomiting, chest symptoms or signs of serious dehydration. Book a medical review when diarrhoea keeps returning, wakes you at night, occurs without running, causes weight loss or limits activity. Assessment is also sensible after recent antibiotics or travel. A clinician can review medicines, hydration and diet and decide whether tests are needed.
Questions to take along
Could my training intensity, heat, meal timing or drink be contributing? Is a food intolerance or bowel condition worth checking? How should I hydrate for my type of run? Is any medicine safe for occasional use?

Questions people ask
Should I run through diarrhoea?
No. Rest, replace fluids and return gradually only when you feel well; seek advice if symptoms are severe or recurring.
Can sports drinks cause loose stools?
Some concentrated drinks or sweeteners can upset the bowel. Record what you use and discuss repeated symptoms with a clinician.
