Diaper rashes and teething: what parents should know

Short answer
Teething may coincide with looser stools and more frequent nappy changes, but nappy rash is caused by moisture, friction, and irritants against the skin.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main trigger
- Moisture, friction, and contact with stool or urine
- Helpful first step
- Frequent changes and gentle drying
What the rash may mean
Nappy rash commonly appears as redness or soreness on the buttocks, genitals, or upper thighs. A wet or soiled nappy keeps the skin warm and damp, while rubbing and contact with stool or urine weaken the skin barrier. During teething, a child may drool more and have changes in feeding or bowel habits; teething itself does not directly infect the skin. A rash with separate small spots around its edge, involvement of skin folds, or worsening after several days can suggest yeast involvement rather than simple irritation.
How to care for the skin
Change wet or soiled nappies promptly and clean gently with lukewarm water or fragrance-free wipes. Pat the area dry rather than rubbing, then apply a protective barrier recommended for your child. Give short, supervised periods without a nappy when practical, and use a loose-fitting nappy to reduce friction. Avoid scented products, harsh soaps, talc, and scrubbing. If the rash is persistent or has features of yeast, a clinician may recommend an appropriate treatment; do not use leftover creams without advice.
When to seek medical care
Arrange medical advice if the rash is spreading, blistered, bleeding, very painful, or accompanied by fever, pus, or marked swelling. Seek prompt help if your child seems unusually sleepy, is drinking poorly, or has fewer wet nappies, because diarrhoea or illness can cause dehydration. A rash that does not begin to settle with careful nappy care also deserves an assessment, especially in a young baby.
Questions for your doctor
Could this be irritation, yeast, or another cause? Which barrier product and cleaning routine suit my child? How long should improvement take, and what changes would mean the rash needs review?

Questions people ask
Does teething directly cause nappy rash?
No. Teething may occur alongside bowel changes, but the rash results from skin exposure to moisture, irritants, and friction.
When might a nappy rash need treatment?
A persistent rash, rash in the folds, or rash with small spots around its edge may need assessment for yeast or another cause.
