Diagnosing gallstones

Gallstone pain often prompts questions about its location, timing, severity, relation to meals and whether it spreads to the back or shoulder. Nausea, vomiting and indigestion can occur with many digestive problems, so symptoms alone cannot confirm a stone. Blood tests may look for inflammation or changes affecting the liver or pancreas. Ultrasound can show stones and the gallbladder; other imaging may be considered when the first scan does not answer the question or a complication is suspected. Write down episodes of abdominal pain, foods eaten beforehand, vomiting, fever and changes in skin or eye colour. Avoid taking non-prescription pain medicines repeatedly without checking that they are suitable for you.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or persistent abdominal pain, fever, repeated vomiting, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, faintness or confusion. These signs can indicate blockage, infection or pancreatic inflammation and need prompt assessment, whether or not gallstones are found.

Ask what the ultrasound showed, whether blood tests suggest irritation of the liver or pancreas, and whether another scan is needed. Ask which symptoms mean you should return urgently and how your pain should be managed while the diagnosis is clarified.
