What Should You Know About DHT Hirsutism?

DHT hirsutism is excess coarse hair growth linked to androgen activity, including dihydrotestosterone sensitivity at some hair follicles. DHT is an androgen made from testosterone, and follicles can respond differently to these hormones. The pattern may involve the face, chest, abdomen, back, or other areas where coarse hair is not usually prominent. The term describes a possible hormonal mechanism; it does not identify the cause by itself.

Hirsutism means male-pattern hair growth in a woman, such as dark, coarse hair on the chin or upper lip. Androgens can enlarge a fine hair into a thicker, more pigmented hair, while follicle sensitivity can affect growth even when a hormone result is not markedly raised. Polycystic ovary syndrome is one possible association, but medicines, adrenal or ovarian hormone conditions, and naturally increased follicle sensitivity can also be considered. A clinician will look at the timing and distribution of hair growth, menstrual changes, acne, scalp hair thinning, and other symptoms rather than relying on DHT alone.

Arrange a medical assessment if new or increasing coarse hair is troubling you, particularly when periods have changed or acne and scalp thinning have appeared. The assessment may include a medication history, examination, and selected hormone tests guided by your symptoms. Hair removal can address visible hair while the underlying cause is being assessed. Shaving and trimming do not make hair grow back thicker. Laser hair removal may reduce dark hair over a course of treatment, whereas electrolysis targets individual follicles and can suit some hair and skin combinations. Medication such as spironolactone may be considered by a clinician for androgen-related hair growth; it requires medical supervision and is not suitable for everyone.

Seek prompt medical care when coarse hair appears or progresses quickly, especially with a deeper voice, increased muscle bulk, marked acne, rapid scalp hair loss, or changes in the clitoris. These features can signal a stronger androgen effect and need assessment. Also mention absent or very irregular periods, unexpected bleeding, fertility concerns, or any medicine or supplement that may affect hormones. Sudden, severe symptoms or feeling acutely unwell warrant urgent evaluation.

You can also ask which hair-removal method matches your hair colour and skin tone, whether a medicine could be contributing, how treatment may interact with pregnancy plans, and when a follow-up review should occur.
