Skin Rash: What to Know

A rash may be itchy, sore, warm, dry, swollen, or barely noticeable. Location, timing, texture, and spread help narrow the possibilities. Atopic dermatitis often brings itch and dry, inflamed skin; contact dermatitis can follow contact with an irritant or allergen; heat rash tends to affect sweaty areas. Ringworm may form a scaly edge, while scabies often causes intense itch and can affect close contacts.

A rash is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Psoriasis can produce thicker, sharply defined scaly plaques, and intertrigo can develop where skin rubs and stays moist. A drug rash may begin after a new medicine. These patterns overlap, so a clinician may ask about products, travel, illness, medicines, household symptoms, and exposures.

Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and moisturizer, avoid scratching, and keep the area cool and dry. Stop a newly introduced cosmetic or detergent if contact irritation is possible, but do not stop a prescribed medicine without medical advice. Do not apply steroid or antifungal creams blindly when the diagnosis is unclear; the wrong product can mask or aggravate some conditions.

Take clear photographs and note when the rash began, where it started, how it changed, and any new medicine, food, product, plant, animal, or illness. A clinician may inspect the skin and choose treatment based on the pattern rather than the label used for it.

Seek urgent help for a rash with trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, fainting, blistering, skin peeling, severe pain, purple spots, or involvement of the eyes or mouth. Get prompt medical advice for fever, rapidly spreading redness, pus, or a rash after starting a medicine. Arrange routine assessment if it persists, keeps returning, disturbs sleep, or affects several people at home.

Ask what pattern the rash suggests, whether testing is needed, which products to pause, how to relieve itch safely, and which changes should trigger urgent review. Mention every medicine and supplement started before the rash.
