What should you know about dexamethasone for laryngitis?

Laryngitis involves irritation and swelling around the voice box, often after a viral upper-respiratory illness. Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid; it reduces inflammation rather than killing an infection. A clinician may consider it when swelling is marked, the voice is needed urgently, or another airway concern is present. Hoarse voice alone does not establish that a steroid is appropriate.

Acid reflux can irritate the voice box and prolong hoarseness, while a common cold may trigger short-lived inflammation. Treating the trigger and protecting the voice can matter as much as reducing swelling.

Use your voice gently, avoid whispering and smoking, and drink enough fluid to keep your throat comfortable. Follow the prescribed dose exactly and do not use someone else’s steroid. Mention diabetes, previous stomach problems, mood conditions, pregnancy, and other medicines before taking it.

Arrange a GP consultation if hoarseness persists, keeps returning, or affects swallowing or breathing. A clinician can examine your throat and voice box symptoms and decide whether a steroid, another treatment, or observation fits the cause.

Get urgent help if breathing becomes noisy or difficult, you cannot swallow saliva, your lips look blue or grey, or swelling is progressing quickly. Seek prompt medical advice for severe sore throat, dehydration, coughing blood, or hoarseness that does not improve as expected.

Ask what is causing the laryngitis, why dexamethasone is being considered, whether reflux or infection needs attention, and when persistent hoarseness requires further examination.
