Detailed cholesterol test

The test commonly reports total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides. These values describe different parts of fat transport in the blood; they are not a diagnosis by themselves. Results are considered with age, blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, kidney disease, family history and previous cardiovascular problems.

Some laboratories provide calculated values or non-HDL cholesterol. The preparation varies: some people can eat normally, while others may be asked to fast. Follow the instructions from the clinic because food, alcohol, illness and medicines can influence certain results.

Tell the clinician about medicines, supplements, pregnancy, recent illness and any difficulty fasting before the sample. Drink water unless you were told otherwise, and do not stop prescribed treatment on your own. Ask which result matters most for you and what target has been set.

Treatment may include dietary changes, regular activity, smoking support and medicines. If a statin is recommended, discuss how it lowers harmful cholesterol, when to take it, possible muscle symptoms and which blood tests may be monitored. A repeat test may be arranged after a treatment change to see the direction of your response.

Arrange follow-up if the report is marked abnormal, if triglycerides are unexpectedly high, or if you have a strong family history of early heart disease. The blood test itself is not an emergency. Seek urgent help for chest pressure, sudden breathlessness, fainting, or symptoms of a stroke such as new facial weakness, arm weakness or speech difficulty; cholesterol results should not delay emergency assessment.
