What can cause a fever after time outdoors?

A fever is a body response rather than a diagnosis. It may occur with a respiratory infection such as acute bronchitis, bronchiolitis, a common cold, COVID-19, or croup. It can also accompany chickenpox, cellulitis, or brucellosis. The likely cause depends on the person’s age, symptoms, examination, recent travel, animal or food exposure, medicines, and other health conditions.

Record when the fever began, how it was measured, whether it comes and goes, and any associated cough, rash, pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, or urinary symptoms. This pattern is more useful than the reading alone.

Rest and take regular fluids unless a clinician has advised fluid restriction. Wear light clothing and keep the room comfortably cool; avoid ice baths or heavy wrapping. Use a fever medicine only if it is suitable for you and follow the label or clinician’s directions. Do not give children medicines intended for adults, and check ingredients in combination cold products to avoid taking the same medicine twice.

Seek emergency help for difficulty breathing, confusion, a seizure, a stiff neck with severe headache, fainting, blue lips, or a rapidly spreading rash. Get prompt medical advice for a baby with a fever, persistent vomiting, signs of dehydration, severe pain, or fever after significant heat exposure. Arrange assessment when fever continues, returns repeatedly, or occurs in someone with a weakened immune system.
