What should you know about dermoscopy instrument?

A dermatoscope uses a lens and illumination to reduce distracting surface reflection and make fine patterns easier to inspect. Some models use polarised light; others use a contact plate with a suitable liquid or gel. Handheld devices can be used on a single mark, while digital systems may capture images for comparison. The instrument does not see every cause of a skin problem and cannot determine a diagnosis without clinical interpretation.

The clinician positions the instrument over the area and may move it across nearby skin to compare patterns. You may feel light contact or pressure, but the device itself does not remove tissue. Tell the clinician if the area is tender, open, infected, or recently treated. For a useful assessment, describe when the change appeared and bring photographs that show earlier appearance if you have them. Ask whether images will be retained for future comparison.

Arrange an examination for a changing mole, persistent unusual patch, unexplained sore, or new scalp or nail mark. Review is especially appropriate when a lesion repeatedly crusts, bleeds, hurts, or differs noticeably from your other marks. The instrument helps organise the visual assessment; it should not be used as a home diagnostic tool or as a reason to postpone care.

Ask whether contact or non-contact viewing will be used, what pattern was seen, and whether a saved image will help track the area. If a biopsy or removal is recommended, ask what prompted that step and how the result will guide care.
