Dermoscopy device: how it is used

A dermatoscope is a handheld or digital examination device with magnification and a light source. Some devices use a contact layer to reduce reflection from the outer skin; others allow non-contact viewing. The clinician can inspect pigment distribution, tiny vessels, scales, and other structures that may be hard to see unaided.

The device improves observation but does not decide what a lesion is. Interpretation depends on the complete skin examination, the lesion's history, and sometimes comparison images or tissue examination.

Usually, no special preparation is needed. Do not cover the area with makeup or a thick product immediately before the visit if the clinician needs to inspect it. Point out the first date you noticed a spot and explain any changes in shape, colour, surface, bleeding, itch, or pain.

The examination is normally quick and does not cut the skin. A clinician may save an image for later comparison. The result may support observation, a follow-up examination, or a recommendation for removal and tissue assessment.

Request a skin check for a lesion that is changing or unlike your other moles. Seek prompt advice if it bleeds, crusts repeatedly, becomes persistently sore or itchy, or develops an irregular border or new colour. A device can assist an examination, but a changing lesion still needs a clinician's judgement.

Ask whether the device used contact or non-contact viewing, what features were observed, and whether an image will be stored for comparison. Clarify whether the spot needs monitoring, another review, or removal, and what changes should prompt earlier contact.
