What should you know about dermatoscope DermLite DL4?

The device combines magnification with controlled light to make surface detail and some structures below the outer skin easier to inspect. Depending on the examination, the clinician may use contact or non-contact viewing and may apply a clear fluid to reduce surface reflection. The instrument does not by itself diagnose melanoma or another skin condition. Its findings are interpreted alongside the mark’s history, appearance, location, and changes over time.

A DL4 may be used for a mole, freckle, or other pigmented area during a routine assessment or a focused review. It can help a clinician decide whether a mark can be monitored, needs closer review, or should be sampled.

Attend with clean, product-free skin over the area when possible, and tell the clinician when you first noticed the mark and whether it has changed. Mention itching, bleeding, crusting, tenderness, or a new lump, as well as any personal or family history of skin cancer. Bring earlier photographs if you have them; comparison can be useful when a mark is being monitored.

The examination is generally an external inspection. Follow the clinician’s advice about photographing or reviewing the area later, and avoid treating or picking a changing mark before it has been assessed.

Arrange a clinical assessment for a mark that is changing in size, shape, colour, or texture, or for a new mark that looks different from the others. Seek prompt medical advice for unexplained bleeding, repeated crusting, an open sore that does not heal, or a rapidly changing lesion. These signs do not identify the cause, but they warrant examination rather than self-checking with a device.

Ask what the clinician sees through the dermatoscope, whether the mark needs a photograph or follow-up, and what change should bring you back sooner. If a biopsy or removal is suggested, ask what the procedure is intended to clarify and how the area will be cared for afterward.
