What should you know about dermatofibroma on back?

A dermatofibroma is a compact overgrowth of fibrous tissue within the skin. On the back, it may appear as a small, round, tan, brown, pink, or darker bump. It often feels firmer than the surrounding skin and may form a slight dimple when gently pinched from the sides. The surface can be smooth or mildly scaly, and occasional tenderness or itching is possible, especially after rubbing from clothing.

The reason one develops is not always clear. Some people notice one after a minor injury, an insect bite, or another local irritation, although a definite trigger may be absent. A dermatologist can often recognise the pattern by examining and feeling the lump. If its appearance is unusual, a small skin sample may be considered to distinguish it from other growths.

If the lump is stable, does not bother you, and has already been identified by a clinician, monitoring may be all that is needed. Keep track of its size, colour, surface, and symptoms with occasional notes or photographs taken in similar lighting. Avoid squeezing, cutting, or repeatedly scratching it, since irritation can cause bleeding or inflammation and make its appearance harder to judge.

Removal is generally considered when the diagnosis is uncertain or the lesion repeatedly catches on clothing, becomes uncomfortable, or causes significant cosmetic concern. Surgical excision removes the nodule for examination, but it leaves a scar and the skin may take time to settle. Discuss the expected scar location and other options with a dermatologist before choosing treatment.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if a back lump is new and has not been checked, or if you cannot tell whether it is a dermatofibroma. Seek prompt medical advice for a lump that grows, changes colour or shape, develops an open sore, bleeds without being scratched, becomes persistently painful, or is associated with marked inflammation. These features do not identify a particular diagnosis, but they do warrant direct examination rather than home monitoring.
