What should you know about dermatofibroma multiple?

Dermatofibromas are made of fibrous cells within the skin. Several may appear over time, often as small firm bumps with pink, brown, or deeper pigmentation. They can differ slightly from one another, so a clinician should not assume that every new bump is identical to an earlier one. A focused examination helps decide whether observation is enough or whether a sample is useful.

Map the locations or take dated photographs so you can compare lesions without constant touching. Protect them from shaving friction, scratching, and tight clothing. Book a dermatology appointment if lesions are appearing repeatedly, if the pattern is unclear, or if one nodule is changing. Excision can be discussed for a lesion that catches on clothing, remains itchy or painful, or cannot be confidently diagnosed from examination.

Arrange prompt review for rapid enlargement, new bleeding, an open sore, persistent pain, pronounced colour change, or a lesion that looks unlike the others. A symptom or visual change does not establish a diagnosis, but it is a reason to have that particular nodule examined rather than relying on the appearance of the rest.

Ask how many lesions appear typical, whether any one should be biopsied, and how often you should check your skin. If several removals are being considered, ask which lesion should be prioritised, how scars may differ by site, and how the removed tissue will be assessed.
