What should you know about depression pain?

Short answer
Depression can amplify or accompany physical pain through changes in sleep, stress, activity and nervous-system processing, so both need assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The pain–mood connection
Depression may present with headaches, back pain, muscle aches, stomach discomfort or a general sense of bodily heaviness. Pain can reduce sleep, movement and social contact; those changes can then deepen low mood and fatigue. The pain is real even when routine tests do not identify a single cause, and it should not be dismissed as imaginary or simply emotional.
Describe where the pain is, how it feels, when it began, what worsens or eases it, and how it affects sleep and function. Feeling anxious, difficulty concentrating, irritability and insomnia may accompany either problem. A clinician can assess physical causes, medicines and depression together rather than treating one symptom in isolation.
Managing symptoms together
Book a medical assessment for new, persistent or worsening pain, especially when it affects sleep or daily activities. Keep gentle movement within your limits, use a regular sleep routine and note pain, mood, activity and medicines. Talk with your clinician before using pain medicines regularly or combining them with other treatments. Support may include physical care, talking therapy, medicine or coordinated follow-up.
Warning signs
Seek urgent care for chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, sudden weakness, new confusion, loss of bladder or bowel control, serious injury, fever with a rapidly worsening condition, or thoughts of suicide. Contact emergency services or attend an emergency department when pain or depression makes it impossible to stay safe.
Questions for an appointment
Ask which causes need checking, whether your medicines could affect pain or mood, how to combine physical and psychological treatment, and what symptoms should trigger urgent review. Mention pain-related sleep loss and any limits on work, walking or self-care.

Questions people ask
Is pain from depression imaginary?
No. Depression can accompany or amplify genuine physical pain, and physical causes still deserve assessment.
Can treating depression help pain?
It may help some people, particularly when sleep, stress and activity are also addressed, but the plan should be individualised.
