What should you know about depression attack symptoms?

Short answer

Depression does not usually occur as a brief attack; symptoms more often build or persist and can affect mood, thinking, sleep, energy and safety.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Pattern
Symptoms often persist or recur rather than arriving as a single brief attack.
Track
Mood, sleep, energy, concentration and safety concerns.
Urgency
Thoughts of self-harm require immediate support.

What the symptoms can feel like

A depressive episode may bring low mood, loss of interest, guilt, hopelessness, irritability or emotional numbness. Some people notice fatigue, daytime sleepiness, difficulty concentrating, or changes in appetite and sleep. Symptoms can fluctuate during a day, but a sudden wave of distress may also reflect anxiety, panic, poor sleep or another health problem rather than depression alone.

A person can have depression without looking visibly sad. Reduced self-care, slowed activity, withdrawal from people, or difficulty making ordinary decisions may be clearer signs. Keep a record of when symptoms began, what changes you notice, and how they affect work, relationships and sleep.

What you can do now

Tell someone you trust what is happening and arrange an appointment with a family doctor or mental-health professional. Bring a list of medicines, recent stressors, sleep changes and any physical symptoms. A clinician can assess depression alongside conditions such as insomnia and discuss talking therapy, medicines, or both when appropriate.

Until you are assessed, choose small, repeatable actions: eat something simple, drink water, keep a regular wake time, take a short walk if able, and avoid using alcohol or drugs to manage distress. Do not stop a prescribed antidepressant suddenly without medical advice.

When to seek urgent care

Seek immediate help if you may harm yourself, have a plan to die, cannot stay safe, or feel unable to care for basic needs. Contact local emergency services or go to the nearest emergency department, and stay with a trusted person while help is arranged. Urgent assessment is also needed for severe confusion, extreme agitation, or several nights with almost no sleep accompanied by unusually high energy or risky behaviour.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Could these symptoms be depression, anxiety, a sleep problem, a medicine effect or a physical condition? What treatment options fit my symptoms? How should I monitor changes in sleep, energy and safety? Who should I contact if my mood worsens?

Questions people ask

Can depression feel sudden?

A noticeable wave of despair can feel sudden, although the underlying changes may have been developing beforehand. Panic or anxiety can also cause abrupt distress.

What if I am sleeping badly and cannot concentrate?

Arrange a clinical assessment because depression, insomnia, medicines and other conditions can overlap. Mention the timing and effect on daily life.
