Depression and anger: what should you know?

Short answer
Depression can appear as irritability or anger as well as sadness, especially when sleep, stress, and emotional energy are disrupted, and repeated anger deserves support.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible presentation
- Depression may involve irritability, anger, restlessness, low mood, tiredness, or withdrawal.
- Safety step
- Pause and create distance when anger escalates, especially if anyone feels threatened.
Why depression may feel like anger
Depression can reduce patience and make ordinary demands feel overwhelming. A person may snap, argue, feel restless, or become unusually sensitive to criticism. Irritability can sit alongside low mood, loss of interest, tiredness, guilt, changes in sleep, or difficulty concentrating. Depression commonly presents with irritability in some people, but anger alone does not diagnose depression.
Sleep loss, anxiety, pain, alcohol or other substances, medication effects, trauma, and other mental or physical conditions can also affect anger. Consider what happens before an outburst, how long it lasts, whether you feel in control, and what follows afterward.
Ways to respond
Arrange a primary-care or mental-health appointment if anger is new, frequent, difficult to control, damaging relationships, or occurring with low mood or withdrawal. Describe examples without minimising them. A clinician can review sleep, medicines, substances, mood, stress, and safety, then suggest therapy, medication review, or other support.
When tension rises, pause the conversation, move to a safer space, slow your breathing, and return only when both people can talk safely. Avoid driving or using alcohol to calm down. If someone may be harmed, create distance and contact emergency support.
When urgent help is needed
Get emergency help if you might hurt yourself or someone else, have access to a weapon during a crisis, cannot control violent impulses, or experience severe confusion or hallucinations. Contact local emergency services or attend the nearest emergency department. Urgent review is also appropriate if anger follows a major medicine change or prolonged lack of sleep.
Questions to ask
Ask: Could depression, anxiety, sleep loss, pain, or a medicine be affecting my temper? How can I recognise an escalating episode? What therapy or support fits my situation? What should my family do if I become unsafe?
