Depression and tiredness: what should you know?

Short answer
Depression can make a person feel tired through changes in sleep, motivation, concentration, and daily energy, but persistent tiredness also deserves a broader health assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible overlap
- Low mood, disrupted sleep, low motivation, and poor concentration can all add to tiredness.
- Useful record
- Note sleep, energy, mood, medicines, and daily function before your appointment.
How depression and tiredness can overlap
Depression may present with low mood, loss of interest, slowed thinking, reduced drive, or a sense that ordinary tasks require unusual effort. Some people sleep longer and still feel unrefreshed; others have difficulty sleeping and become drained during the day. Fatigue can therefore be part of depression, while tiredness itself has many possible explanations, including insomnia, medication effects, anaemia, thyroid problems, infection, or another sleep disorder.
Notice the pattern rather than judging yourself. Record when tiredness began, whether sleep restores you, changes in appetite or mood, concentration, activity, and any new medicines. Depression commonly presents with tiredness, but tiredness alone does not establish depression.
Practical next steps
Arrange a primary-care appointment if tiredness persists, interferes with work or relationships, or occurs with low mood or loss of interest. A clinician can ask about sleep, mood, physical symptoms, medicines, alcohol or other substances, and daily routines, then decide whether an examination or tests are appropriate.
While waiting, keep a regular wake time, get gentle daylight and movement if able, eat regularly, and break demanding tasks into smaller steps. Avoid changing prescribed treatment or taking supplements marketed for energy without advice. Treatment may address depression, a sleep problem, or another cause identified during assessment.
When to seek care urgently
Seek urgent help now if you may harm yourself, feel unable to stay safe, hear or see things others do not, or have severe confusion. Contact local emergency services or go to the nearest emergency department. If tiredness comes with chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, or sudden weakness, treat that as an emergency too.
Questions to take to your appointment
Ask: Could my sleep pattern, medicines, or a physical condition be contributing to this tiredness? What mood symptoms should I track? Would checking for a sleep disorder or another medical cause help? What support is available if depression is contributing?

Questions people ask
Does tiredness confirm depression?
No. Depression can include tiredness, but tiredness also occurs with sleep disorders, medicines, and physical health conditions.
Can poor sleep worsen depressive symptoms?
Yes. Difficulty sleeping can leave you depleted and make mood, concentration, and coping harder, so both concerns should be discussed.
