Depression and nausea: what should you know?

Short answer
Depression and nausea can occur together, but nausea may also have a separate physical, medication-related, or anxiety-related cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Track
- Timing of nausea, food intake, medicines, sleep, and mood
- Avoid
- Stopping prescribed antidepressants without medical advice
- Act urgently
- Repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, or self-harm thoughts
What the combination can mean
Depression can change sleep, appetite, digestion, energy, and the way the body responds to stress. Feeling anxious alongside low mood can bring queasiness, a tight stomach, or an urge to vomit. Nausea can also follow a new medicine, an infection, reflux, migraine, pregnancy, or another health problem, so it should not automatically be attributed to depression. Notice when it starts, whether food or movement changes it, and whether low mood, loss of interest, fatigue, poor sleep, or difficulty concentrating are present.
What you can do now
Take small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink if you are losing fluid. Try plain foods in modest portions when tolerated, avoid alcohol, and keep a simple record of symptoms, meals, medicines, sleep, and mood. Do not stop a prescribed antidepressant suddenly; contact the prescriber if nausea began after starting or changing treatment, because timing can guide a safe adjustment. Arrange an assessment if symptoms persist, interfere with eating, or occur with signs of depression.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, blood or coffee-ground material in vomit, fainting, confusion, severe dehydration, or chest pain. Contact a clinician promptly if you cannot keep fluids down, have very dark urine, or your mood includes thoughts of self-harm. A clinician can assess both physical causes and depression, including whether a medicine is contributing.
Questions for your doctor
Could a medicine, pregnancy, reflux, infection, or another physical problem explain the nausea? How should I manage it if treatment for depression is adjusted? What mood or hydration changes should prompt earlier contact?
